Heavy truck drivers are responsible for transporting goods over long distances, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations while maintaining their vehicles.

Key Performance Areas

• Must have dangerous goods and valid PrDP.
• Must be a quality driver, who is responsible and takes good care.
• Transport goods safely over long distances.
• Must have a clean criminal and credit record.
• Must have a good medical record.

Education and Experience

• Matric
• Code 14 driver’s license
• Valid PrDP (DGP)
• Dangerous goods experience advantageous.
• Refrigerated and or sensitive cargo experience advantageous.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an Ultra heavy vehicle driver (Tri-axle).
• Experience must have been gained through driving articulated heavy vehicles; Handle long-haul and overnight trips, sometimes cross-border.

Skills and Knowledge

• Must be able to read and write in English and communicate in Afrikaans.
• Must be numerically orientated.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with customers and reporting issues.
• Neat tidy seeks to achieve above average fuel consumption.
• Must have excellent references and be an above average performer as a driver.
• Ability to drive long hours and travel regularly, with high level of physical fitness to handle loading and unloading tasks.
• Adaptability and foresight to handle unexpected situations such as traffic and/or weather conditions.
• Excellent driving skills with a strong understanding of applicable truck driving rules and regulations.
• Requires a high level of focus and ability to remain alert for extended periods.

Tasks to perform

• Basic vehicle maintenance on the road – Assist the Technical Team.
• Ensure correct loading and securing of cargo.
• Plan routes and meet delivery schedules while adhering to traffic laws and safety regulations.
• Check that loads comply with weight and safety regulations.
• Supervise loading/unloading of cargo.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure everything is in working condition.
• Check brakes, tyres, lights, fluids, and coupling systems.
• Report mechanical issues promptly.
• Keep the vehicle clean and roadworthy.
• Maintain detailed logbooks and trip sheet, vehicle services and repair status and delivery notes.
• Ensure all permits, waybills, and licenses are valid.
• Comply with road traffic laws, driving hours, and rest periods.
• Follow company policies and safety procedures.
