BME, a division of Omnia, is looking for a skilled Explosives Truck Operator to join its operations in the Northern Cape. The successful candidate will be responsible for loading blast holes with explosive products using a mixer-placer truck while ensuring strict adherence to safety, health, environment, risk, and quality (SHERQ) standards.

The role also includes truck inspection, maintenance, and supervision of the truck assistant to ensure efficient and safe blasting operations on site.

Key Responsibilities

Loading of Blast Holes

  • Operate the pumping process to load explosive products according to blasting design specifications
  • Inspect blast holes and measure depths to ensure they meet required standards
  • Report any out-of-spec holes to the blaster
  • Calculate the correct quantity of explosive product required for each hole
  • Inspect pumps and equipment settings before commencing pumping operations
  • Take and analyse product samples to confirm density before the charging process begins

Truck Inspection, Repairs and Maintenance

  • Conduct pre-use inspections and complete the required checklists before operating the truck
  • Address red-category faults immediately before operating the vehicle
  • Repair or report blue-category faults for correction within 24 hours
  • Ensure inspection checklists are signed by the Foreman and mechanic
  • Calibrate truck instrumentation and measurement systems regularly
  • Maintain the vehicle in clean and presentable condition
  • Complete daily truck performance administration and weekly reporting
  • Calibrate the required sampling scale daily

Truck Driving

  • Operate the explosives truck safely in all weather and road conditions
  • Transport explosive materials to blasting sites according to safety regulations
  • Ensure all required legal documentation is present in the truck, including permits and compliance records

Supervision

  • Supervise and guide the Truck Assistant during blasting operations

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics
  • Valid Code 14 driver’s licence
  • Dangerous Goods Permit (PDP)

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ truck driving experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience driving in a mining, explosives, or dangerous goods environment
  • Minimum 1 year experience operating an emulsion charging unit

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong numerical and calculation skills

  • Ability to write reports and complete operational documentation
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Customer-focused approach
