Industry Insight (Fuel Tanker Driving in South Africa)
Fuel tanker driving is one of the highest-paying driving niches in South Africa — but also one of the most regulated.
Here’s the reality:
- Companies prioritise safety and compliance over everything
- Experience with actual fuel loading depots (Engen, Astron, etc.) gives you a major advantage
- Drivers without Dangerous Goods certification + tanker exposure rarely get shortlisted
If you’re serious about growing in this space, focus on:
- Getting DG certification
- Gaining exposure to hazardous cargo handling
- Building a clean, incident-free driving record
Pro Tip
When applying, clearly state in your CV:
- Types of tankers operated
- Depots you’ve loaded from
- Types of fuel handled (diesel, petrol, LPG, etc.)
That alone can set you apart from 90% of applicants.
