Industry Insight (Diesel Mechanics in South Africa)
Diesel mechanics are in high demand in South Africa, especially in:
- Public transport fleets (like buses and taxis)
- Logistics and trucking companies
- Mining and construction sectors
Mechanics with experience on brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Scania, and MAN are particularly valuable because these dominate the heavy vehicle market.
In the current market:
- Skilled diesel mechanics are often harder to find than drivers
- Workshops prioritise candidates who can diagnose faults quickly, not just repair
- Computer diagnostics knowledge is becoming increasingly important
Pro Tip
When applying, make sure your CV clearly shows:
- Brands of vehicles you’ve worked on
- Types of repairs (engine rebuilds, gearbox work, diagnostics, etc.)
- Experience with fleet maintenance vs once-off repairs
That’s what hiring managers look for first.
