Job Overview
Bapotrans is seeking a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join its operations in Rustenburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, tractors, cane loaders, and earthmoving machinery.
This role is critical in ensuring operational continuity by minimising downtime through preventative maintenance, efficient breakdown response, and strict compliance with health and safety standards.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Grade 12 / Matric / National Certificate
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic Trade Certificate
- Valid driver’s licence (Heavy-duty licence advantageous)
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in diesel vehicle or heavy equipment maintenance
- Experience working on trucks, trailers, tractors, cane loaders, or earthmoving equipment
- Experience in cane haulage operations (advantageous)
- Experience mentoring or assisting apprentice mechanics (advantageous)

Duties and Responsibilities
Servicing and Preventative Maintenance
- Service vehicles, tractors, cane loaders, and earthmoving equipment according to scheduled maintenance plans
- Conduct routine inspections to identify potential issues before breakdowns occur
- Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications and company standards
- Maintain accurate service and maintenance records
Breakdown Response and Repairs
- Attend to breakdowns, perform fault-finding, and carry out repairs
- Repair engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulics, and related components
- Test equipment after repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation
- Provide breakdown support during peak operational periods
Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Adhere strictly to occupational health and safety regulations
- Ensure safe working practices, including correct use of PPE
- Maintain equipment in line with legal and company compliance standards
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or defects to supervisors
Vehicle and Equipment Compliance
- Ensure all vehicles and equipment meet roadworthy and statutory requirements
- Identify compliance risks and implement corrective actions
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory checks
Workshop Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment
- Ensure tools and equipment are stored correctly and safely
- Promote good housekeeping and safety practices
Reporting and Administration
- Complete job cards, service reports, and breakdown documentation accurately
- Provide feedback to management on maintenance activities and outstanding repairs
- Record parts usage, labour time, and follow-up requirements
Additional Duties
- Assist other artisans and technical staff when required
- Perform any reasonable tasks assigned by management
- Contribute to workshop goals related to safety, productivity, and continuous improvement
